Jessica Calderon, LPC

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology at St. Mary's University in San Antonio in 2004. I went on to Texas State University and graduated with a Master's degree in Community Counseling in 2009. I  have always had a passion for helping others and this is what led to me to the counseling field. Before graduating I was able to gain my first counseling experience at the university working with children and their parents. These experiences helped me discover Play therapy and it's benefits for children. This also helped shape the future of my counseling career working with children and families. My past work experience includes the non-profit sector, a mental health facility, and private practice. I have also worked in the public school system with at risk youth. My experiences in the field have taught me the importance of collaborating with other professionals and providers on behalf of my clients. I have experience providing counseling to children, adolescents, and adults, and I have provided both individual and group services.

My philosophy on counseling is based on my belief that we all have a need to feel connected and it is this need that drives our relationships with others. When we feel encouraged, we also feel capable and appreciated, which leads to positive relationships with others. When we are discouraged we may act in unhealthy ways by withdrawing, competing, or giving up, which leads to unhealthy relationships with others. The counseling process can help people learn to get their needs met in healthy and appropriate ways thereby improving their relationships with others. It can also assist people is the resolution of past trauma. My role as the counselor is to help facilitate these processes. I strive to provide my clients with a nonjudgemental environment where they can feel safe and accepted. I believe this type of counseling environment is necessary for growth and change.
